Iggesund develops its European service

2015 06 24 123032Iggesund Paperboard is taking major steps to further develop its delivery service. The company will now expand its long-term cooperation with SCA, which dates from 1995. As of summer 2016 about 1,000,000 tonnes of paperboard, paper and pulp will be shipped annually via the new transport link to and from Kiel. Together SCA and Iggesund have the necessary volumes to create cost-effective transport solutions with a high service level to continental Europe. The change involves the vessels and also a new main terminal in Germany.

“We are gaining access to more modern vessels. Combined with changes to our European sheeting operations, this will lay the foundation for a better delivery service,” comments Christina Törnquist, Logistics Director at Iggesund Paperboard.

Next year Iggesund will move from its present terminal in Lübeck to the Port of Kiel. The latter was chosen for its better development possibilities and good long-term owners, who are also willing to invest in high quality.

“The location is optimal for our planned service development,” Törnquist explains. “It is close both to our customers and to our service station. It is also strategically positioned close to the Kiel Canal, which allows for many new possibilities in the future.”

Under the new arrangement Iggesund will be able to ship paperboard with the same frequency as before, both to Kiel and to other ports. The new sea transport arrangements and new terminal are part of the in-depth review of its service that Iggesund is currently conducting.

“Delivery service is my speciality and I am pleased with the measures we are taking now,” Törnquist says. “Equally important, though, is the service package we are launching under the name of ‘Care by Iggesund’. It includes everything from the fast delivery of samples to local technical support and an extensive range of knowledge material that enables customers to get the most out of our paperboard.”

Iggesund Paperboard is part of the Swedish forest industry group Holmen, one of the world’s 100 most sustainable companies listed on the United Nations Global Compact Index. Iggesund’s turnover is just over €500 million and its flagship product Invercote is sold in more than 100 countries. The company has two brand families, Invercote and Incada, both positioned at the high end of their respective segments. Since 2010 Iggesund has invested more than €380 million to increase its energy efficiency and reduce the fossil emissions from its production.

Iggesund and the Holmen Group report all their fossil carbon emissions to the Carbon Disclosure Project. The environmental data form an integral part of an annual report that complies with the Global Reporting Initiative’s highest level of sustainability reporting. Iggesund was founded as an iron mill in 1685, but has been making paperboard for more than 50 years. The two mills, in northern Sweden and northern England employ 1500 people.

sca newlogoCommencing in autumn 2016, SCA Logistics will begin calling at Kiel with its Ro-Ro vessels as part of a new partnership with Iggesund Paperboard and Seehafen Kiel. Kiel will thus replace Lübeck as a distribution point for Central Europe. A total of approximately 1,000,000 tons per year will be shipped on the new route to and from Kiel.

Seehafen Kiel is starting the process to expand its existing warehouse capacity in Ostuferhafen. The new forest products terminal will lie directly adjacent to the Intermodal rail terminal and the Ro-Ro terminal in the same port area. SCA will phase out its terminal in Lübeck and relocate operations to Kiel.

“Seehafen Kiel has made a big and dedicated effort to develop the concept that eventually won the terminal study we conducted jointly with Iggesund to handle the volumes for Iggesund Paperboard and SCA Paper,” says Magnus Svensson, President of SCA Logistics.

“It is very pleasing that we will be able to continue developing and expanding our longstanding partnership with Iggesund Paperboard, which dates back to 1995. Jointly, Iggesund and SCA have the volumes required to generate cost-efficient transport solutions,” adds Magnus.

Demand for containerized freight transport is growing steadily. When SCA’s Ro- Ro vessels begin calling at Kiel, Ro-Ro traffic between Sundsvall, Umeå, London and Rotterdam will be reduced from the current number of two departures per week, to one. The service will be maintained by moving a considerable volume, from Ro-Ro to containers. To allow for this development, SCA Logistics’ existing container route between Sundsvall, Umeå, Rotterdam and St. Petersburg will be expanded.

The container volumes in SCA Logistics’ terminals in Sundsvall and Umeå are expected to grow by 80% to 90% and in Rotterdam by 50%. At the same time, the Ro-Ro volumes at these ports will decline proportionately.

“Global container transport has been increasing for a long time and this trend will continue. This also means that container systems in Europe are becoming so large-scaled and comprehensive that containerization is becoming increasingly competitive for transport within Europe. We want to benefit from this trend and are therefore modifying our transport mix”, says Magnus.

All changes are expected to take place during the third quarter of 2016.

logo twisidesSurvey highlights that 88% of respondents indicated that they understood, retained or used information better when they read print on paper compared to lower percentages (64% and less) when reading on electronic devices.

Chicago, June 23, 2015 – A new survey into the preferences of consumers for printed versus digital communications has been published today by Two Sides, the global organization created to promote the responsible production, use and sustainability of print and paper.  The survey, which was commissioned by Two Sides and undertaken by international research company Toluna, sought the opinions and preferences of UK and U.S. consumers on a number of issues relating to the change from paper-based to digital media.

Results of the U.S. survey highlighted that 88% of respondents indicated that they understood, retained or used information better when they read print on paper compared to lower percentages (64% and less) when reading on electronic devices.  The same trend was found for reading complicated documents with 80% indicating a clear preference for reading print on paper, and reading on screens showing a much lower preference than print at below 16% across all age groups.

The survey also revealed 81% found printed media more relaxing to read, while 62% of mobile/smartphone users (rising to 73% among the 18 – 24 year olds) were concerned about how these devices were damaging their health (eye strain, headaches, insomnia).  Overall, the survey reported that 81% of respondents preferred to read print on paper when given the choice.

“The results of this U.S. survey will be useful for all those who choose the way in which information is distributed, particularly for advertisers, marketers and educators who need to understand how information is being delivered, received, processed and retained,” explains Phil Riebel, President of Two Sides North America.  “While on-screen reading occupies an increasing amount of consumer time, people’s preferences are still for reading print on paper which they believe to be more informative, less distracting and less harmful to their health.  Results also show that many people are concerned about the effects on learning and literacy due to the switch from printed books to digital media in our school system.”  The Two Sides survey shows that 68% of respondents believe that books are more likely to encourage learning and the development of other skills than using screens, and that 63% of respondents worry that children are not going to learn as much without books.

While acceptance of digital media is generally stronger among younger age-groups, there is also a strong preference for print on paper existing across all ages.

The full U.S. survey report can be downloaded at http://www.twosidesna.org/US/Reading-from-Paper-or-Reading-from-Screens--What-do-Consumers-Prefer.

Key findings from the Two Sides U.S. Survey

1.    88% of respondents believe that they understand and can retain or use information better when they read print on paper. There were only minor differences between age groups.  Reading on screen shows lower preference with the lowest being 41% indicating that mobiles and smartphones were useful for understanding and retaining information.

2.    When given a choice, 81% indicated that they prefer to read print on paper. These percentages drop to 39% for screens, laptops and PCs, 30% for e-readers and 22% for mobiles or smartphones. The preference for print on paper is seen across all age groups and is strong at over 77%.

3.    81% indicated they are most relaxed when reading print on paper. Age group differences were minor. Mobiles or smartphones are seen as the least relaxing way to read with only 30% preferring this method.  Younger age groups indicated that they are more at ease with reading from screens than the over 45 age groups.

4.    71% indicated that they were more relaxed and receptive when reading a newspaper in print compared to 36% who felt more relaxed and receptive when reading a newspaper from a screen.  There were differences across age groups, however even younger age groups clearly preferred print over online.

5.    75% indicated that they were more relaxed and receptive when reading a magazine in print compared to 26% when reading a magazine on screen.  Differences among age groups were minor, with over 73% of all age groups preferring to read a magazine in print.

6.    80% stated a clear preference for reading print on paper for complicated materials in contrast to only 13% preferring to read complicated materials on a computer screen. Mobiles and smart phones were preferred by only 3% for reading complicated materials.  Reading on screens showed a much lower preference than print at below 16% across all age groups.

7.    The preference for reading long documents in print was also clear with only 32% indicating they prefer reading documents of 3 pages or more on screen.

8.    Only 23% indicated that they are easily distracted when reading print on paper whereas electronic media showed higher distraction ranging from 66% for mobiles and smartphones to 42% for e-readers.

9.    Many respondents print out documents. The main reasons are:

  • 74% believe printed documents are easier to read
  • 55% believe printed documents are more secure
  • 56% believe printed documents are better for storage and archiving
  • 47% believe printed documents are less likely to be lost

10.    The preference for printing increases with increasing age.  However, over 68% across all age groups indicated that they print because it is easier to read.

11.    44% to 57% indicated that they prefer paper bills by mail for their financial services, utilities, telecoms, mobile or smartphone and TV.  The over 45 age groups showed a higher preference for paper bills than the under 45 groups.

12.    Advertisements in print are clearly given more attention than their online equivalent:

  • 64% pay more attention to advertising when reading magazines in print / 26% pay more attention to advertising when reading magazines on line
  • 60% pay more attention to advertising when reading newspapers in print / 29% pay more attention to advertising when reading newspapers on line
  • 48% pay more attention to advertising when reading leaflets received by mail or dropped at the door
  • 26% pay more attention to general online advertising

13.    There are clear concerns that switching from printed books to digital methods is affecting education:

  •  68% believe that books are more likely to encourage learning and the development of other skills than using screens
  •  63% worry that children are not going to learn as much without books
  •  59% believe that learning from books is the best way to learn
  •  58% would insist that their children learn from books
  •  42% believe that learning from screens, PCs, tablets etc. is just as effective as books

14.    62% of mobile or smartphone users, 59% of computer users and 50% of e-reader users are worried that these devices may be damaging their health (ex: eyestrain, headaches, insomnia).  Reading in print had the least health concerns with 22% concerned that it may be damaging their health.

In order to increase energy efficiency of its tissue production lines, Sofidel SPA in Italy has ordered two Advantage ReTurne energy recovery systems from Valmet. The system does not only recover energy from the headbox jet power, but also returns it back to the process as electrical energy.

The order is included in Valmet's second quarter 2015 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

This will be Sofidel's second and third installation of the innovative energy saving solution and will be installed at Delicarta mill's TM2 in Italy and Delitissue mill Poland. The first Advantage ReTurne installation started up at Sofidel's Delicarta mill in Valdottavo, Italy in 2014 and proved to fully meet the expectations right from the start.

Valmet's Advantage ReTurne recovers energy from the Headbox jet stream and returns it back to the process as electrical power.

For Sofidel it is important to find new innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of its production. The company has joined Climate Savers, the international program promoted by WWF, to voluntarily adopt plans to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases using innovative strategies and technologies.

"The first installation of Valmet's Advantage ReTurne energy saving system has been a positive experience for us. Its energy saving capabilities turned out to be better than we hoped for. Therefore we have decided to improve the energy efficiency in two more of our tissue machines," says Simone Capuano, Vice Chief Technical Officer, Sofidel.

"Energy saving is high on our customers' agendas, and we are working hard to develop energy efficiency in our new and existing tissue making solutions. Our high expectations on the first Advantage ReTurne system were substantially exceeded. We are thus convinced that the two new installations will be as successful as the first one, and will help Sofidel reach its environmental targets," says Johan Björn, Sales Director EMEA, Valmet.

Technical information

The Advantage ReTurne energy recovery system is installed in the forming section. It is unique in that sense that it recovers 50% of the energy from the headbox drainage water and via a generator converts it into electrical power which is supplied to the sectional drives. The Advantage ReTurne does not affect the formation of the paper or the tissue making process, it is easy to handle and has low maintenance need. This new innovation is very efficient in both new and existing tissue machines.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mohawk, Thomas D. O’Connor, Jr., will join U.S. Congressman Richard Neal (MA) to discuss the future of the fine paper industry during the New England Paper Cluster’s annual conference in Springfield, MA, on Monday, June 22, 2015.

2015 06 22 093138

Mohawk Chairman & CEO, Thomas D. O’Connor, Jr.

The event has been organized by The New England Paper Cluster, a regional, non-profit trade association founded by the Economic Development Council of Western Massachusetts. The organization - comprised of New England-based businesses including paper mills, packaging companies, and printing companies - works to promote the regional paper industry.

Mohawk is currently completing renovations on an envelope converting facility in South Hadley, MA. The company is investing approximately $2 million to retrofit the facility, and expects to hire up to 40 full time employees to produce over 500 million envelopes annually.

“Insightful, forward-thinking companies such as Mohawk are supporting the local paper economy by locating plants in New England,” said Ben Markens, Principal of The Markens Group and President of The Paperboard Packaging Council. “This meeting will assist us in identifying ways we can encourage other paper-related firms to see value in moving to the region as well as share expertise and best practices so that existing companies may thrive.”

“The Town of South Hadley has been extremely cooperative and supportive of our interest in opening a new envelope manufacturing and distribution facility,” said Thomas D. O’Connor, Jr.  “We selected our new facility in South Hadley because the layout of the building is ideal for our manufacturing needs, the site required minimal construction prior to becoming operational, and there is an abundant pool of highly skilled envelope workers in Western Massachusetts,” O’Connor continued.

U.S. Congressman Richard Neal (MA), a member of the Congressional Paper Caucus, will present an update from Washington about recent legislative efforts to promote the paper industry on the federal level.

For additional details about the conference, visit The New England Paper Cluster at http://www.papercluster.org.
