Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, announced on 27 July 2021 an investment of EUR 210 million in increasing folding boxboard capacity at its Husum mill in Sweden. The company is responding to growing demand for sustainably produced packaging materials that support the circular economy. The investment strengthens Metsä Board's position as the leading producer of folding boxboard in Europe.

At present, the annual folding boxboard capacity of the Husum’s paperboard machine BM1 is 400,000 tonnes, and after the investment it will rise to 600,000 tonnes. Additional capacity will enter the market during 2024–2025. The investment value is approximately EUR 210 million, divided in 2021–2024 and mainly in 2022–2023. The investment will be financed with current cash funds and future cash flows from operating activities. The Husum port concept will be examined separately, taking into account the growing logistics volumes of the entire integrated mill, and the necessary potential investments will be decided later.

Preparatory work for construction will begin in October 2021 in connection with the planned annual maintenance shutdown of the Husum integrated mill. The ramp-up of additional capacity is expected to start in autumn 2023 and full production capacity is expected to be reached by the end of 2025.

2021 07 28 115425

The investment will increase Metsä Board's annual sales by approximately EUR 200 million. In addition, the investment is estimated to have a positive impact of approximately EUR 50 million on the company's annual comparable EBITDA. Sales growth and EBITDA improvement are expected to be achieved in full in 2026.

Metsä Board’s operating result for July–September 2021 will include an impairment loss of approximately EUR 5 million related to the paperboard machine BM1, and it will be reported as an item affecting comparability.

The additional capacity will be directed mainly to the North American and European markets, where the demand growth for Metsä Board's premium lightweight paperboards is expected to continue. Metsä Board's folding boxboard is used, for example, in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics packaging as well as in food service packaging.

A conveyor feeding wood chips both to the hardwood and softwood digesters at Metsä Board’s Husum pulp mill in Sweden caught fire on Friday, 18 June at about 12.30 CET. The city fire brigade managed to get the fire under control by about 14.30 CET and could hand over the responsibilities for surveillance to the Husum mill local fire brigade at 21.30 CET.

logoThe fire did not spread to other buildings and it did not cause personal injuries.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. Investigation at the parts and facilities damaged by the fire has been started on Saturday morning.

Currently, pulp and paperboard production at the Husum integrated mill is at a standstill. According to preliminary estimates, pulp production would be at a standstill for four weeks. Paperboard production is expected to start in the coming days at a lower than normal capacity.

The magnitude of the damage caused by the fire and effects on production are under further evaluation.

Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, has designed a light but strong, easily recyclable packaging for the new Chopin Organic Rye Vodka range at its Excellence Centre in Äänekoski, Finland.

2021 05 07 123955For Podlaska Wytwórnia Wódek “Polmos” S.A., the family-owned distillery that produces the Chopin Vodka brand, it was important that the packaging conveyed the brand ethos, as Joanna Dolińczyk, Marketing Coordinator, Chopin Vodka brand explains: “When we were looking for inspiration for the packaging design of our organic product, we wanted the packaging to reflect its organic production process. We had an extremely enthusiastic vision to create a truly organic and highly ecological packaging with three main goals: purity, whiteness and simplicity.”

The packaging is manufactured using a protective F-flute, with all layers made of lightweight MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright white kraftliner. The all-white litho-laminated packaging has a light and robust structure based on locking flaps that require no glue. No adhesive, combined with minimal coverage of low migration inks with water-based varnishing, created a package that is safe, stylish and easy to recycle. The packaging was manufactured by Prost-Key Packaging in Poland.

The opening mechanism allows the packaging to be opened and closed several times with ease, whilst also locking the bottle into place. The curved double folds add strength and reveals the bottle when viewed from the side. The whiteness of the design features the word ‘organic’ embossed on the sides and emphasises purity.

Iiro Numminen, Structural Packaging Designer, Metsä Board, commented: “The packaging communicates the brands promise to the consumer in every way. Easy recyclability was also a factor in the design concept as the importance of circular economy is paramount.”

The package was designed and tested at Metsä Board’s Excellence Centre that utilises cutting-edge technology for R&D, packaging design, and paperboard and packaging performance. Here the ambition is to accelerate material and packaging innovation and provide a collaboration platform for customers and technology partners globally.

The packaging is manufactured using the lightweight MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright white kraftliner, produced at Metsä Board Husum mill. Its fresh fibres are 100% traceable to sustainably managed Northern European forests.

Metsä Board launches a development programme for its white-top kraftliner mill in Kemi, enabled by Metsä Fibre's new bioproduct mill investment announced today. The development programme is a significant step towards the company's sustainability targets for 2030. Metsä Board and Metsä Fibre are parts of Metsä Group. Metsä Board owns 24.9 per cent of its associated company Metsä Fibre.

The development programme will increase the mill's annual paperboard capacity by approximately 40,000 tonnes. The programme includes a series of modernisation and bottleneck investments in the paperboard production line, and as part of the programme, Metsä Board will purchase the modernised unbleached pulp production line with an annual capacity of approximately 180,000 tonnes from Metsä Fibre in 2023. The total investment value of the programme is approximately EUR 67 million, divided in 2021–2023, and mainly in 2023.

logoThe development programme will reduce the Kemi paperboard mill’s water consumption by about 40 per cent and energy consumption by about 5 per cent per tonne of paperboard produced. Metsä Board's company-level target is to reduce water consumption by 30 percent and energy consumption by 10 percent per tonne of paperboard produced by 2030 compared to 2018.

Metsä Board’s annual net surplus in pulp will increase by approximately 325,000 tonnes in 2023, consisting of Metsä Board's 24.9 per cent share of Metsä Fibre's new bioproduct mill’s capacity increase, the transfer of the unbleached pulp production line to Metsä Board's direct ownership and the impact of the increased paperboard capacity on pulp consumption.

Financing for Metsä Fibre's bioproduct mill consists of funds generated from operations and debt. Metsä Board does not invest equity in Metsä Fibre to finance the project. Metsä Fibre will record an impairment loss impacting the result in the first quarter of 2021 related to the old pulp mill in Kemi. The impact on Metsä Board’s share of Metsä Fibre’s result is estimated to be approximately EUR -8 million and it will be classified as an item affecting comparability.

“Demand for premium and recyclable white-top kraftliners is growing rapidly in our main markets in North America and Europe. After these investments, Metsä Board's leading position in coated white kraftliners globally will be further strengthened, and Metsä Fibre's new bioproduct mill together with Metsä Board's paperboard mill will form a world class integrate in Kemi, Finland. The investment will significantly reduce water and energy consumption at the Kemi paperboard mill, and bring us closer to our ambitious sustainability targets, which we have set for year 2030. This also supports our customers' sustainable business,” says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board.

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, aims at strengthening its position as Europe’s leading producer of folding boxboard and plans to increase its production capacity.

The company has started pre-engineering for increasing the annual production capacity of folding boxboard machine BM1 at the Husum mill in Sweden by approximately 200,000 tonnes. The pre-engineering phase includes also an evaluation of the mill port’s capacity for increased volumes of raw materials and finished goods.

2014 01 30 083551The planned investment would further strengthen Husum BM1’s position as the biggest folding boxboard machine in Europe. The final investment decision is subject to the results of the pre-engineering phase. The readiness to make the final investment decision is expected to be achieved in the summer of 2021 and the ramp-up of the additional capacity would start in 2023.

“We have experienced good growth in our safe and sustainable folding boxboards in recent years. The high utilization rate of our current production capacity is a limiting factor for future growth. In order to continue profitable growth together with our customers, we are now looking at a potential capacity expansion. Husum as an integrated site would be an efficient platform for further development of Metsä Board’s paperboard business,” says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board.

Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, is delighted to announce that two of its folding boxboards, MetsäBoard Natural FBB and MetsäBoard Pro FBB OBAfree, as well as two food service grades, MetsäBoard Natural FSB Cup and MetsäBoard Pro FSB Cup, have now received home compostability certificates complying with NF T 51-800 standard. Metsä Board’s eco-barrier paperboard MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB already holds the same certificate.

“In order to enhance a circular economy our main target is that our paperboards are recycled after use. But recycling is not always possible – the paperboard may be contaminated due to its contents and therefore cannot be recycled. In such a situation compostability is the next best alternative,” says Helena Moring-Vepsäläinen, Product Safety Manager at Metsä Board.

All Metsä Board’s paperboards, excluding PE coated grades, already hold industrial compostability certificates complying with DIN EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 standards. They are all made of pure fresh fibres sourced from sustainably managed Northern European forests. They are also lightweight, contributing to a reduction of the carbon footprint throughout the whole supply chain as well as following the circular economy principles thanks to easy recyclability.

Metsä Board, a leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, is putting the latest artificial intelligence to good use at its Kemi mill in order to improve the runnability of its white kraftliner on a customer’s corrugating line. Metsä Board will be collaborating with DS Smith, a leading provider of corrugated packaging solutions operating across 37 countries. The analytical solutions and technology are supplied by Valmet, the leading global developer and supplier of process technologies, automation and services to the pulp, paper and energy industries.

“We strive at continuously developing the high performance of our paperboards. In paperboard production there are several quality parameters that we need to balance. With the data coming directly from the customer’s converting lines we can find the optimal combination. In addition, we can follow the effect of the supply chain on the quality parameters, for example, the moisture content of the board during transport,” says Ari Kiviranta, SVP Development at Metsä Board.

Metsä Board’s Kyro mill began using artificial intelligence for quality management on its folding boxboard machine last year. Metsä Board is also continuing to investigate different possibilities to implement artificial intelligence on other production lines.
