Valmet has developed a chrome-free Yankee cylinder coating, Valmet Infinikote-2 Yankee Metallizing, to improve work safety in the coating process and sustainability of the coating as well as to comply with potential future legislation both in the EU and the US. The new coating developed by Valmet is the environmentally safest Yankee metallizing coating available.

High performance thermal spray coating increases Yankee cylinder efficiency and lifetime. The thermal spraying process of the new coating is the same as in Valmet's previous Yankee cylinder metallizing coating but now the material being applied is completely chrome free. The new material does not contain any chrome and does not generate any hexavalent chrome during its application.

Valmet's new Yankee metallizing process is chrome free.Valmet's new Yankee metallizing process is chrome free.

Valmet has over 20 years of experience in Yankee cylinder thermal spray coating. A recognized risk of metallizing has been that during the process potentially harmful hexavalent chromium is created. Chromium is a fundamental component of almost every ferrous based hard-facing alloy.

Yankee metallizing is often carried out on-site at the customer's premises. "With the new chrome free Yankee cylinder coating we enhance work safety and are ready to comply with stricter environmental legislation," says Marko Heino, Director, Field Services, Valmet.

Valmet's new generation of Yankee cylinder metallizing alloy contains no chromium-bearing constituents. "Test results with the new material are convincing, demonstrating significantly improved application characteristics and meeting or exceeding all our key objectives," says Andrew Cross, Senior Operations Manager, Global Yankee Services, Valmet.

In addition to being chromium free, the new Valmet Infinikote-2 Yankee Metallizing coating also boasts the following improvements: reduced dust production and fumes during its application and increased heat conductivity. It also provides a tougher and more wear resistant surface which prolongs the expected life time of the cylinder.

A happy startup team with members from Valmet and Alas Doradas in front of the first jumbo roll on January 23.A happy startup team with members from Valmet and Alas Doradas in front of the first jumbo roll on January 23.

The key to success comes from the synergy effect gained when combining two of Valmet's foremost innovations. In this case, the energy saving Advantage ViscoNip press, which has a unique ability to adapt to the Yankee dryer shell, is boosted by the Advantage ReDry web heater. The Advantage ReDry further enhances dryness by utilizing exhaust air and humidity from the hood, to heat the web and thereby increase post pressure consistency.

"We are proud that Alas Doradas has selected our well proven Advantage technologies which have been truly spot-on for this upgrade," says Kent Nika and Sergio Vargas, Sales managers at Valmet.

"We are also honored to have been given the confidence to provide guidance and support throughout this important expansion and performance improvement that Alas Doradas is going through."

Close cooperation and mutual responsiveness have also been factors in the success of the project.

Valmet has developed an innovative online solution for measuring lime mud moisture - Valmet Lime Mud Moisture Measurement. It can be used to monitor lime mud filter performance on the conveyor belt to improve lime mud quality. The new solution is also applicable as a feedforward measurement for lime kiln power control. Through more accurate power control, it is possible to optimize energy consumption and gain significant energy savings.

"The problem with laboratory measurements is that samples are taken so seldom that measurement data cannot be used for power control. It is possible only with an online measurement," says Timo Laurila, Business Manager, Recovery Analyzers and Advanced Process Controls, Automation, Valmet.

Valmet Lime Mud Moisture MeasurementValmet Lime Mud Moisture Measurement

Valmet Lime Mud Moisture Measurement is a non-contacting measurement that provides the moisture content of lime mud. It features an infrared sensor with a special optical design, resulting in excellent measurement accuracy. The solution is based on Valmet's long experience in moisture measurement technology.

Excellent results reported by pulp mills

This new lime mud moisture measurement has already proven its capabilities in pulp mills. According to customers, its correlation with laboratory measurements has either been on a very high level or the lime mud moisture measurement is even more accurate. Lime mud filter operations can be seen immediately in the moisture measurement level. Moisture sensor cleaning is not needed, not even in a dusty environment. The measurement can be used in lime filter maintenance planning, too.
