Metso to supply a pulp mill to Oji Paper to China

Metso will supply a greenfield kraft pulp mill to the Japanese Oji Paper Co. Ltd., to be built in Nantong City, Jiangsu Province, in the southern part of China. Start-up of the pulp mill is scheduled at the end of 2012. The value of the order will not be disclosed. A typical value of this type of a pulp mill ranges from EUR 100 to 150 million depending on the scope of the delivery. More than a half of the order was included in Paper and Fiber Technology’s Q2 orders received and the rest in Energy and Environmental Technology’s Q2 orders received.

Metso’s scope of supply covers all main process equipment for the new mill, including chip screens and storage systems, a continuous cooking system, a fiberline including wash presses, ozone bleaching, a wet lap machine, a recovery boiler, an evaporation system, a white liquor plant and a gas handling system. The state-of-the-art technology delivered by Metso will ensure environmentally friendly and efficient production.

The new pulp mill will produce 700,000 tonnes of bleached hardwood pulp annually and will be integrated with an existing paper machine at the Nantong mill.

The order emphasizes Metso’s strong capabilities as a full-scope supplier for the pulp and paper industry. In June 2010 Metso announced that Ilim Group contracted Metso to supply the main technology for a new 720,000 tonnes kraft pulp mill in Bratsk, Russia.

Oji Paper Co. Ltd., one of the world’s largest paper producers, manufactures paper, pulp, and processed paper goods, including newsprint, carbonless paper, wrapping and packaging paper, and paperboard. The new pulp mill in Nantong is a part of Oji´s strategy to promote business expansion in East Asia.

The Norske Skog Skogn mill in Norway is one of the largest newsprint producers in Europe. The mill has decisively sought ways in which to improve the operation and efficiency of its three newsprint machines, PM 1, PM 2 and PM 3.

Last year, the mill decided to convert PM 2 so that it is able to run on a neutral system, from pH 5.4 to pH 7, at a filler content of 10%, with the possibility of using recycled furnish. This would improve the density and opacity of the produced newsprint.

Morten Skrove, Production Manager of PM 1 and PM 2: “One important stage in this project was to increase the web dry content after the forming section, which also improves runnability and web stability. Based on the good experience gained with PM 3 through the HiDrain high-vacuum suction box, it was natural to rely on the same technology for PM 2.”
The successful installation and start-up with Metso took place in early January 2010.

Web dry content increase of 2.5% after couch roll
Three days after the HiDrain start-up, the dry content after couch roll increased to 16.5% from the earlier average of 15%, both for 45 g/m2 and 48.8 g/m2 basis weights, at the vacuum level of 55 kPa.

Around one month after the start-up the dry content after couch roll was already 17.5%, and runnability has been exceptionally good. The furnish chemistry and mix optimization are still on-going at the TMP plant, so it is therefore still too early to estimate the final effect of the HiDrain suction box on speed increase or reduction in steam consumption.

Benefits of the HiDrain suction box
• higher sheet dry content after forming section
• improved runnability, especially at the press and dryer section
• fewer breaks
• potential for speed increase thanks to higher sheet dry content

Clear plans for the future
After the optimization work at PM 2 has been completed the mill has clear plans to improve formation through an upgrade or rebuild after which the quality of newsprint produced by PM 2 will match the high-standards produced by PM 1 and PM 3.

Norske Skog Skogn was founded in 1962. Serving demanding customers worldwide, the mill has its own port facilities, and a regular twice weekly shipping delivery is made to the UK and Continental Europe. The three paper machines, PM 1, PM 2 and PM 3, have a total annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes and produce paper under the Nornews brand.

Metso has signed an agreement with Otor Papeterie de Nantes for the replacement of the old QCS system in its mill of Nantes, France. The project will be completed before the end of this year.

Metso’s delivery scope includes a QCS system with interface to existing profiler for CD Moisture that will be installed on the 2,90m – width paper machine.

Replacement of older scanners in Paper Industry is bringing great benefits not only because of better technology and quality controls but also due to the increase risks and cost of maintenance and parts availability.

Metso IQ new technology QCS scanners require much less maintenance on site to sustain operation. The increased accuracy of measurements provide improved performance and controls enabling adequate production response to market competitiveness and quality requirements.

Metso has started the investment in new facilities in Araucaria, Parana state, in southeastern Brazil. The investment will improve Metso’s competitiveness in serving the pulp and paper and power generation industries, and thus strengthen its presence in emerging markets. At the first phase, Metso’s investment will amount to around EUR 14 million (BRL 30 million). Later on, the investment will be continued by further increasing the capacity and capabilities of the new facilities.

The new facilities in Araucaria will be built on a 60,000 m2 land area, of which 10,000 m2 will be for new equipment sales and a service workshop. The unit will be operational by the end of 2011. When the new facilities are ready Metso will move all activities from the current leased facilities in Curitiba, located approx. 10 km from the new site.

With the new facilities Metso will be in a good position to support the growth of pulp production in South America, where several new greenfield mills and new production lines are planned for the coming years. There will be a growing demand for services in the pulp and power generation industries, requiring increased local competences and workshop capabilities.
