Metso will supply a cooking plant and a fiber line upgrade to the Khon Kaen mill of Phoenix Pulp & Paper Co. in Thailand. Start-up of the equipment is scheduled for July, 2012. The value of the order is approximately EUR 10 million. The order is included in Paper and Fiber Technology’s Q2 2011 orders received.


Metso’s delivery will include a two-vessel digester for producing 200,000 tons of eucalyptus pulp per year. The delivery will also include a wash press for the fiber line upgrade. The new cooking system will enable the Khon Kaen mill to increase the production capacity and utilize the raw material more efficiently. It will also reduce the mill’s environmental impact.


Phoenix Pulp & Paper Public Company Limited is a pioneer in pulp products. Founded in 1975, the company is a subsidiary of SCG Paper, one of the leading integrated producers of pulp and paper products in Thailand. Phoenix Pulp & Paper sells its products to customers in Thailand and abroad.

Metso will rebuild a relocated fine paper machine for the Mexican Grupo Unipak, S.A. de C.V. PT. at their new mill site Grupak Hidalgo in the municipality of Emiliano Zapata in Mexico. The start-up of the relocated and rebuilt machine is scheduled for the first quarter of 2013. The value of the order is approximately EUR 5 million. The relocated machine originally comes from the USA.


A 5.6-m-wide fine paper machine will be reconditioned and modified to manufacture recycled containerboard grades in the basis weight range of 70-195 g/m2. Metso’s delivery will comprise a modernization of the forming section. Metso will also modify the dryer section, air systems, steam and condensate system as well as stock preparation system with a new dry end pulper.


Grupo Unipak, S.A. de C.V. PT. is a large Mexican company producing a variety of food packaging products. The company currently produces liner and fluting grades for its own integrated use on two machines located in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Metso has concluded an agreement to supply all main technology for the 1.5 million tonnes greenfield pulp mill of Suzano Papel e Celulose S.A., to be built in the state of Maranhão in the northeastern part of Brazil. Start-up is scheduled for the first half of 2013. A stock exchange release regarding the advanced negotiations between Metso and Suzano was published on March 1, 2011.


The value of the order is not disclosed. However, a typical value of an order of this size and scope is EUR 800-900 million. About 60 percent of this is made up by Metso-supplied equipment and systems and they will be recorded as Metso’s new orders and consequently in net sales during the delivery period. The rest covers equipment and related services from other suppliers and partners, which are also within Metso’s responsibility but is invoiced directly from Suzano by the subcontractors.


Metso’s scope of supply covers the main parts of a green field pulp mill comprising wood handling, cooking plant and fiberline, pulp drying and baling, evaporation, power boiler, recovery boiler, causticizing and lime kiln, including an integrated automation solution for all process areas. The new mill will produce 1.5 million tonnes of bleached eucalyptus market pulp per year.

Suzano Papel e Celulose is a forestry-based company and one of the largest vertically integrated producers of pulp and paper in Latin America. The company’s main products, sold on the domestic and international markets, are eucalyptus pulp, printing and writing paper and paperboard.

The Annual General Meeting of Metso Corporation approved today the Financial Statements for 2010 and decided to discharge the members of the Board of Directors and the President and CEO of Metso Corporation from liability for the financial year 2010. In addition, the Annual General Meeting approved the proposals of the Board of Directors to authorize the Board of Directors to resolve on a repurchase of company’s own shares and on a share issue.


The Annual General Meeting decided that a dividend of EUR 1.55 per share will be paid for the financial year which ended on December 31, 2010. The dividend will be paid to shareholders who on the record date April 4, 2011 have been registered as shareholders in the company’s shareholder register maintained by Euroclear Finland Ltd. The dividend will be paid on April 12, 2011.


Jukka Viinanen was elected Chairman of the Board and Maija-Liisa Friman was elected Vice Chairman of the Board. Ozey K. Horton, Jr. was elected as a new member of the Board. The Board members re-elected were Mikael von Frenckell, Christer Gardell, Yrjö Neuvo, Erkki Pehu-Lehtonen and Pia Rudengren. The term of office of Board members lasts until the end of the next Annual General Meeting.


The Annual General Meeting decided that the annual remunerations for Board members be EUR 92,000 for the Chairman, EUR 56,000 for the Vice Chairman and for the Chairman of the Audit Committee and EUR 45,000 for the members and that the meeting fee including committee meetings be EUR 600 for those members whose place of residence is in Nordic countries, EUR 1,200 for those members whose place of residence is elsewhere in Europe and EUR 2,400 for those members whose place of residence is outside of Europe for each meeting they attend. The Annual General Meeting decided that 40 percent of the annual remuneration be paid in company’s shares purchased from the market. The shares will be purchased directly on behalf of the members of the Board within two weeks from the release of the Interim Review January 1 −March 31, 2011.


The auditing company, Authorized Public Accountant PricewaterhouseCoopers Oy was re-elected to act as an Auditor of the Corporation until the end of the next Annual General Meeting.


The Annual General Meeting decided to establish a Nomination Board of the Annual General Meeting to prepare proposals for the following Annual General Meeting regarding the composition of the Board of Directors and director remuneration. Representatives of the four largest shareholders are elected to the Nomination Board and the Chairman of the Board of Directors shall be an expert member of the Nomination Board.

Metso will continue its collaboration with the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) by supporting the goals and activities related to the main theme of the WWF’s 50th anniversary, the Year of Forests. Metso and four other main collaboration partners support the WWF program aiming to stop global deforestation and to conserve the biodiversity of Finnish forests. The collaboration aims to diversify current forest management practices and to increase forest management methods that mimic the structural characteristics of natural forests.

 

The Year of Forests project aims to spark a dialogue about how companies and consumers alike can impact forest conservation and maintain forest diversity through the choices they make. Additionally, Metso is participating in a forum about the role of Finnish forests in the mitigation of climate change. Based on the dialogue, a discussion paper will be prepared that highlights the opportunities and challenges related to the role of Finnish forests in the mitigation of climate change and bioenergy production. The discussion paper will outline the different views on the direction of Finnish forest management with consideration also to the ecological, social and economic sustainability and their potential in the effective mitigation of climate change.

 

 

Metso and WWF have been collaboration partners for several years. During this time Metso has supported WWF’s Operation Mermaid campaign to save the Baltic Sea and the Naturewatch program related to environmental education for students.

 

 

Metso engages in collaboration and supports its collaboration partners’ projects in the areas of youth work, environment and nature conservation, as well as science, research and education. Our collaboration with universities is tight, and we aim to support also vocational training and youth work especially in emerging markets. For example, in Sorocaba, Brazil, we support a project that gives underprivileged youth vocational training in the metal sector. Already 360 young people have taken part in the training program that began in 1990. Additionally, Metso is a partner in the SOS Children’s Villages in Faridabad, India, and in Vereeniging and Rustenberg, South Africa.

A Tissue Technology Award has been established by Metso to promote university students’ and scientists’ work on energy efficient innovations applicable to the tissue making industry.

A prize amount of totally 25,000 USD will be awarded for the best innovations.

The Tissue Technology Award will be given every second year and the first winners will be announced at the Tissue World conference in Nice, France, in 2013.

A sovereign jury will appoint the winners according to a specific selection process. The jury is formed by representatives from Karlstad University, Sweden, the Energy Square organization and Metso’s Tissue business line.

“Energy efficiency is a crucial issue for the tissue industry globally and it takes a wide perspective and open minds to explore new areas for innovation,” says Marco Marcheggiani, President, Tissue business line, Metso. ”Being the clear market and technology leader in tissue Metso wants to stimulate innovative work also outside our own organization by this award.”

Metso will rebuild the existing PM 1 tissue line of Syktyvkar Tissue Group, JSC at their Syktyvkar mill in the republic of Komi in Russia. The first stage of the rebuild of the line is scheduled to be completed at the end of this year. The value of the order will not be disclosed.


Metso will rebuild the PM 1 tissue line to be of the Advantage DCT 100 type, similar to the mill’s PM 2 tissue line built by Metso. Metso’s delivery will in the first stage comprise a Metso deinking line with stock preparation equipment, an Advantage DCT 100 former section including an OptiFlo II TIS headbox, a press section, an Advantage AirCap hood and a reel. The delivery will also comprise Metso QCS and DCS systems.


The 2.7-meter-wide PM 1 tissue machine is designed for a speed of 1,600 m/min and the line for a daily production of 75 tons of tissue.


The tissue industry in Syktyvkar, since 2005 operated by Syktyvkar Tissue Group, has been present in the paper and tissue business for more than 20 years and is today one of the best known companies on the Russian market for tissue products. The company employs more than 420 people, and annually produces approximately 40 000 tons of tissue.

Metso is donating 20,000 euros to the Finnish Red Cross to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.


A strong earthquake occurred near the eastern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011. The earthquake and the ensuing tsunami caused widespread damage on the eastern part of Honshu Island. Thousands of people have been confirmed dead or are still missing. Additionally, the situation at the nuclear plants, damaged by the earthquake and tsunami, is still unstable.


Metso has a total of 116 employees working at five sites in Japan: Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Okayama and Kitakami. Based on the information we have, no Metso employees were injured in the earthquake or tsunami, but some of the sites have suffered minor damage from the earthquake.

Metso will supply a complete tissue production line to the Moroccan Jeesr Industries for their mill in Berrechid, close to Casablanca. The line is scheduled to start up in the fourth quarter of 2012. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The market value of a tissue production line of this type is in the range of EUR 15–20 million depending on the scope of the delivery and the production output. The most part of the order is included in Paper and Fiber Technology’s Q1 orders received and the automation package in Energy and Environmental Technology’s Q1 orders received.


Metso’s delivery will include a complete production line with stock preparation equipment, a tissue machine, a rewinder and wrapping equipment. The production line will be optimized to produce top-quality tissue paper at low energy and water consumption levels. The delivery will also comprise an extensive automation package including machine, process and integrated drive controls, as well as a quality control system.


The new production line will produce around 30,000 tonnes a year of high-quality facial, toilet and towel grades. The raw material for the new line will be virgin pulp.


Jeesr Industries is a privately owned company, which is part of the Novatis Group, a producer and supplier of various consumer goods, among others baby diapers, for the Moroccon market.
