Metso and Suzano Papel e Celulose S.A. are in advanced negotiations towards concluding a contract for the supply of all main pulp making technology for the 1.5 million tonnes greenfield pulp mill of Suzano Papel e Celulose, to be built in the state of Maranhão in the northeastern part of Brazil. Start-up is scheduled for the first half of 2013. At this point of the negotiations the value of the delivery is not disclosed.


Suzano Papel e Celulose is a forestry-based company and one of the largest vertically integrated producers of pulp and paper in Latin America. The company’s main products, sold on the domestic and international markets, are eucalyptus pulp, printing and writing paper and paperboard.

Metso will supply a 900 TPD (tons per day) lime calcining system to Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties in Ohio, the USA. The delivery will be completed before the end of 2011. The value of the order is approximately EUR 11 million and it was included in Mining and Construction Technology’s Q4 2010 orders received.


The supply will include a preheater rotary kiln with a cooler, a coal firing system, and a complete dust collection and air handling system. The delivery will be complemented by a control system. The new kiln will be the fourth preheater lime kiln by Metso installed in the Martin Marietta facility in Woodville Ohio.


Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., provides a comprehensive range of magnesium oxide, chemically precipitated magnesium hydroxide, and dolomitic lime products.

Metso will supply installation and commissioning services to Amcor Packaging (Australia) Pty Ltd as part of its new machine project for a containerboard line at its Botany Mill in Sydney, Australia. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The order is included in Paper and Fiber Technology’s Q1 orders received.


The main order for the containerboard line was received from Amcor and published in 2008 and an add-on order for this line was received from Amcor and published in 2010.


The new order announced today will comprise the installation of the containerboard machine equipment for the line and supervision services related to commissioning, testing and start-up as well as training services. The installation and services package will complement Metso’s extended scope of supply to Amcor and strengthen the project implementation.


The Botany Paper Mill will generate high-quality recycled paper from waste collected throughout the Sydney area. It will produce paper-based products across a wider range of weights and create packaging that is lighter, more efficient and more environmentally friendly.

Metso Paper Ltd, St-Laurent, Quebec and Usinage Bertrem, QC have signed an agreement naming Usinage Bertrem as an authorized Canadian service center for roll repairs.


The agreement will complement Metso's current services to the pulp industry in North America, and is in line with Metso's strategy to increase the level of business in the services sector. The 22,000 sq ft workshop located in Sorel, Quebec is currently owned by Pierre Cardin, an ex-Beloit employee with over 30 years experience in paper machine and roll manufacturing. Mr. Cardin was a key player in establishing Beloit Manhattan's roll service shop in Renfrew, Ontario.


Metso's partnership with Pierre Cardin and Usinage Bertam will give our Eastern Canada customers access to the highest quality repairs and upgrades from a knowledgeable provider of quality repair services. The services offered at the Sorel location will mainly focus on mechanical roll repairs, but because of existing links to the other Metso roll repair and covering facilities in the US, this location will act as a true one-stop roll service center.

A Metso-supplied Advantage DCT 200 TS tissue production line successfully came on stream on December 18, 2010 at the Hayat Kimya A.S mill in Yeniköy, which is located near the city of Izmit in Turkey. The Hayat Kimya TM 2 started up smoothly on schedule and produced a good-quality saleable product from the very beginning.


“We reached a successful start-up thanks to good cooperation and the efforts by the Metso personnel in a record short time of 13 months from the contract signing. In the light of such a short time, the start-up was a big success for all of us. This cooperation will continue and I am convinced we will continue production with a very good paper quality,” says Lütfi Aydin, Paper Mill Director at the Hayat Kimya mill.


Metso’s delivery comprised a complete tissue production line including a stock preparation system and an Advantage DCT 200 TS tissue machine. The tissue machine is equipped with an OptiFlo headbox, a Metso Yankee cylinder, an Advantage AirCap hood adapted for co-generation, an Advantage WetDust dust system, an Advantage Run sheet transfer system and an Advantage SoftReel L reel. The stock preparation line consists of OptiSlush pulpers, OptiFiner conical refiners and OptiScreen machine screens.


Furthermore, the delivery included an extensive automation package with metsoDNA machine and process controls, a PaperIQ Plus scanner and quality controls. Complete engineering, installation supervision, training, start-up and commissioning were also included in the delivery.


With a width of 5.6 m and a design speed of 2,200 m/min, the new line has a design capacity of 70,000 tons a year of high-quality facial, toilet and towel grades. Raw material for the new line is virgin fiber. The production line is optimized to save energy and to enhance final product quality.

Hayat Kimya A.S. is part of the Hayat Group. The Hayat Group operates primarily in the chemicals, hygienic products, paper and wood-based industries. The Hayat tissue facilities have a paper production capacity of 135,000 tons and a converting capacity of 60,000 tons per year.

Metso expands its maintenance cooperation with SAICA

Metso and SAICA have made an outsourcing agreement on the mill maintenance of Saica Containerboard UK Ltd’s paper mill in Partington, United Kingdom. With this multi-year agreement, which became effective aspapermachine of January 11, 2011, Metso will assume full responsibility for establishment of maintenance operations, mill maintenance and management of improvement projects for the power stations, stock and paper production facilities as well as water treatment equipment at the Partington mill. The value of the agreement will not be disclosed.



The containerboard production line of the Partington mill will also be supplied by Metso. The order for the production line was received from SAICA in 2010 and published on March 18, 2010. The line is scheduled to start up in the first quarter of 2012.



SAICA and Metso have a long history of maintenance cooperation. Since 2005, the companies operate a joint venture for the maintenance of the SAICA mills in Zaragoza, Spain. Since 2007, Metso also has a mill maintenance unit serving the SAICA Venizel mill in France. Based on this cooperation and Metso’s other maintenance references, SAICA and Metso have together developed a maintenance outsourcing model for SAICA’s Partington mill. The model optimizes the use of proactive, condition based, predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance and is based on Metso's streamlined reliability centered maintenance (RCM). The model ensures the highest possible equipment efficiency and cost optimization.



Saica Containerboard UK Ltd. is a subsidiary of SAICA. SAICA is a family owned Spanish company and is a world leader in the production of high performance lightweight corrugated papers from recovered paper and cardboard. The company currently employs over 8,000 people in Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Ireland and the UK. SAICA has an annual turnover of EUR 1.9 billion.

Metso will supply the Harihar Polyfibers unit of Grasim Industries Limited with a recovery boiler to replace the two existing recovery boilers at the rayon grade pulp mill located in Kumarapatnam, Karnataka state, India. Start-up of the boiler is scheduled for the Q3 of 2012. The value of the order is not disclosed. The order is included in Energy and Environmental Technology’s Q4/2010 orders received.


Metso’s delivery includes the main equipment and piping and standard equipment for the recovery boiler as well as field instruments.


The new recovery boiler will improve steam generation and help lower operating and maintenance costs over the mill’s two present bidrum recovery boilers. “We entered into a contract with Metso for a new recovery boiler as replacement for existing boilers for ensuring safe and reliable operation and enhanced environmental performance. This recovery boiler project is prestigious for Harihar plant”, says Mr. Rajendra Jain, Executive President, Harihar Polyfibers.


Metso’s Power business line established its operation in India in 2008, and since then the business operation has scaled up as a regional center to cater to the regional market. In 2009 India was the Metso Group’s 11th largest country in terms of orders received with EUR 117 million. India was also 12th largest country in terms of Metso Group’s net sales with EUR 131 million. The Metso Group has altogether about 700 employees in India.


Grasim Industries Limited, part of Aditya Birla Group, is the largest exporter of Viscose Rayon Fiber (VSF) in India, with an aggregate capacity of 333,975 tpa. The Harihar Polyfibers unit houses facility for manufacture of both VSF and rayon grade pulp, the basic raw material for VSF.

Metso will supply a new recovery boiler and evaporation plant for Eldorado Celulose e Papel S.A.’s new greenfield pulp mill investment in Três Lagoas, Brazil. The value of the order is not disclosed. The order will be included in Energy and Environmental Technology’s Q4/2010 orders received. The start-up of the new plant is scheduled for Q4/2012.



The recovery boiler will be the largest on the American continent, with capacity of 6.800 tons of dry solids per day (tDS/day) and steam generation of 308 kg/s. The evaporation plant will be the largest single line evaporation plant in the world, with 6 thermal stages and capacity of 1600 tons per hour.



“The definition and dimension of the equipment supplied by Metso, shows a concern not only with the return on investment, but also with the search for solutions that add high technology to sustainable industrial processes. An example is the recovery boiler supplied by Metso, it is part of the process generating clean energy, obtained from the renewable raw material, in this case, the biomass residue of eucalyptus,” says Carlos Monteiro, Industrial Director, Eldorado Celulose e Papel S.A.



Eldorado Celulose e Papel S.A. is a newly established pulp company and a newcomer in the pulp and paper industry, but already has plans to build three parallel pulp lines to produce a total of 5 million tons per year when the project is complete. The company is owned by J&F Holding and MCL Enterprises, most notably known for business in the food segment.
