The Board of Directors of Valmet has decided to continue the share based incentive program for Valmet's key employees approved in December 2014. The aim of the program is to combine the objectives of the shareholders and the key employees in order to increase the value of the company, to commit the key employees to Valmet, and to offer them a competitive reward plan based on holding the company's shares.

valmet logoThe program approved in 2014 includes three discretionary periods, which are the calendar years 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Board of Directors of Valmet shall decide on the performance criteria and targets in the beginning of each discretionary period. The potential reward of the program from the discretionary period 2017 is based on Comparable EBITA % and orders received growth % of the stable business, that is, the Services and Automation business lines. The potential reward of the plan from the discretionary period 2017 will be paid partly as Valmet shares and partly in cash in 2018. The proportion to be paid in cash is intended to cover taxes and tax-related costs arising from the reward to the key employee. As a rule, no reward is paid, if the key employee's employment or service ends before the reward payment.

As part of the share based incentive program members of the Valmet Executive Team shall have a possibility to receive a matching share reward for the discretionary period 2017 provided that he or she owns or acquires Valmet shares up to a number determined by the Board of Directors by December 31, 2017. Reward receipt is tied to the continued employment or service of the Valmet Executive Team member upon reward payment.

The reward of the plan may not exceed 120 percent of the key employee's annual total base salary. The shares paid as reward may not be transferred during the restriction period, which will end two years from the end of the discretionary period. Should a key employee's employment or service end during the restriction period, as a rule, he or she must gratuitously return the shares given as reward to Valmet.

The plan is directed to approximately 80 key employees. The rewards to be paid on the basis of the plan are in total an approximate maximum of 550,000 shares in Valmet.

Valmet has become one of the first technology suppliers to the global pulp and paper industry to adopt 3D printing technology in its manufacturing processes to shorten lead times.

"3D printing, also called additive manufacturing, is an excellent example of an emerging technology that has huge potential to be exploited widely in Valmet in the future. We have taken a big step towards offering next-generation products without being limited by yesterday's production processes," says Ari Saario, R&D Director at Valmet.

2016 12 01 093052

At its new 3D Competence Center, which was opened earlier this year in Sundsvall, Sweden, Valmet has to date successfully used this breakthrough technology to manufacture molding patterns and selected spare parts. The printing materials include aluminum, Inconel and type 316L steel. The center continuously runs trials with various printing materials and explores ideas for products that can be printed with a 3D printer.

Cutting lead times and time to market

The benefits of 3D printing for pulp and paper mills lie in shorter lead times when a new mold is needed for a customer-specific pattern.  It will also be possible to print parts on demand for rapid delivery.

For Valmet, adopting this new production method means cutting the time to market for new products. With this technology Valmet will be able produce patterns and parts regardless of shape, and tool requirements will no longer present any restrictions.

Information about 3D printing or additive manufacturing

The terms "3D printing" and "additive manufacturing" both refer to the same process: using digital 3D design data to build up a component by depositing material layer by layer.

Additive manufacturing is, in fact, a more accurate term, as it describes a professional production technique. Instead of milling a piece from a solid block, for example, components are built up layer by layer using materials that are available in fine powder form, such as a variety of metals, plastics and composite materials.

Valmet has received a repeat order for a Valmet IQ Process and Quality Vision system (PQV) from Stora Enso Sunila Mill in Kotka, Finland. By monitoring dirt and shives on the mill's pulp drying line 6, the system optimizes both end product quality and line efficiency. The new system will be started up in November 2016. Valmet supplied a similar PQV system for the mill's pulp drying line 4 in 2015.

The order was included in Valmet's third quarter 2016 orders received. Typically the order value of this kind of automation system deliveries is below EUR one million.

2016 11 14 103638

"The results reached with the traditional dirt count method on a light table and the PQV correlate well. Additionally, we now have access to real-time dirt count data in the control room without any delay, and this helps us to control our process faster and more precisely than before," says Henrik Antila, Fiber Line Operations Manager, Stora Enso Sunila.

"This solution features excellent dirt count calculation thanks to its highly advanced defect analysis methods that allow constant, real-time detection of small dirt specks and shives on a fast moving web in the pulp drying processes," says Jukka Paananen, Product Manager, On-Line Quality Management Solutions, Automation, Valmet.

Technical information about the delivery

Valmet's PQV delivery to Stora Enso Sunila Mill features a Valmet IQ Web Inspection System (WIS) that consists of a high-definition matrix camera system and a matching light source to capture crystal clear images of defects in the sheet. Located on the pulp drying machine after the drying section, utilization of the PQV system gives the mill efficient and continuous online quality control.

Sunila's operators can follow dirt count numbers on process control system displays in the control room. Also, they can check dirt distribution on a defect map that is available on a separate screen. The PQV provides online proof of Sunila's typically low dirt counts as dirt count quality control is based on measurements traceable to each bale table. Average dirt counts can be included in each customer delivery.

Unlike other web inspection systems, four matrix cameras allow the LED light beam to use an extremely short duration flash for sharp images unaffected by web speed. The camera system is flicker free and safe for human eyes, the short-duration flash requires little power and avoids heat buildup. Image analysis software with advanced detection algorithms detects and classifies even the smallest dirt specks and shives on the web.

A new high consistency bleaching system was started up according to plan at Rottneros pulp mill in Sweden on September 19, 2016. The start-up was smooth and the 48 hours test run was approved.

The bleaching system is the first step in a larger rebuild project, called Agenda 500, at the mill. The long term goal is to increase both availability and the total production volume of Rottneros two pulp mills to reach a capacity of 500,000 ton per year.

"The check-out and start-up of the plant went beyond expectation, as you want it to do, and we have already been able to lower the peroxide charge. We are very satisfied with the equipment we have bought and it looks promising for the future. We will now continue to ramp up production," says Jan Viper, Project Manager at Rottneros mill.

"This has been a great project, well organized by Rottneros. Having all instruments and surrounding connections prepared made a fast start-up possible. Commissioning took only three days. When we started the project, the time table was very tight, but in the end we were actually ahead of schedule. This is the first installation of the FKC screw presses in Europe, so this is a good reference case for us," says Lars-Olof Larsson, Project Manager at Valmet.

About Valmet's bleaching system for mechanical pulp

Bleaching is part of the pulp production process. In bleaching the brightness of the pulp in a mechanical pulping line is increased by peroxide. The new bleaching system consists of a chemical mixer and a bleaching tower, two washing stages with screw presses, and medium consistency pumps. Before the bleaching tower the pulp is washed and pressed to a high consistency. Bleaching in high consistency gives an effective bleaching reaction and less chemicals are needed.

About the customer Rottneros

Rottneros produces market pulp and has an annual production capacity of just under 350,000 tonnes of pulp, produced at two mills in Sweden. In 2014 Rottneros employed around 250 people, the majority in Sweden and had sales amounting to approximately SEK 1.5 billion. Rottneros' shares have been listed on what is now Nasdaq Nordic, Stockholm since November 1987.
