2015 04 17 103225Christer Segersteén is resigning from his position as Chairman of Södra after a total of 24 years on the Board. The Nomination Committee has proposed Lena Ek as new Chairman, and Hans Berggren as new Board member.

Christer Segersteén was Vice Chairman for 18 years and Chairman for four. In 2015, he will turn 65.

“I have spent many fun, exciting and challenging years with Södra. Södra is now moving forward, with a new Group strategy under new management. Although I will miss Södra, it’s time for others to take over and it feels satisfying to hand over a company that is stable, profitable and financially sound.”

“The proposals that the Nomination Committee will now present to the AGM will ensure that the Board is composed of appropriate and highly competent members, who also represent renewal. Lena Ek has an extensive background in politics and has served on the Board of Södra for 10 years. Hans Berggren has extensive experience in the industry, as well as in cooperative enterprises. Both are forest owners and members of Södra,” says Nomination Committee Chairman, Tomas Andersson.

Lena Ek has worked politically at municipal, county, national and EU levels, and serves on the Board of the Swedish Centre Party as well as the Party’s Executive Committee. She was Minister for the Environment from 2011-2014 under the Swedish Alliance government and since the election in 2014, has been a Member of the Riksdag and Deputy Chair of the Committee on Environment and Agriculture. Lena Ek has been a member of Södra for many years, and owns forest properties outside Mönsterås where she grew up. She served on Södra’s Board from 2000-2010. She was born in 1958, has a degree in international law, and lives in Valdemarsvik.

“Södra is an important organisation and means a lot to us as members. Whatever forest owners do, they can always turn to Södra, and the value that Södra generates for us as its owners is fantastic. The forest and forest fibre have enormous potential in terms of new products and new markets. It is an honour to be recommended by the Nomination Committee,” said Lena Ek.

The proposed new Board member is Hans Berggren, President of the co-operative association Sveriges Stärkelseproducenter and its three subsidiaries Lyckeby Culinar AB, Lyckeby Starch AB and Kockens AB. The Group generates sales of SEK 1.2 billion and sells products to the paper and food industries. Hans Berggren was born in 1956, is an agronomist and lives outside Karlshamn.

Valmet has launched a new and patented calendering technology to the market. The new aqua cooling technology improves the calendering results compared to usual paper production conditions.

2015 04 16 101237In most cases the best calendering results are achieved when the web is cool and stiff, like in pilot trials for example. With aqua cooling technology, pilot-type environment is brought to production-level, by cooling down the web before the calendering nip. This is enabled by applying a small amount of water with a moisturizer, and evaporating it with an air dryer.

Aqua cooling calendering is aimed for making the end-product more lightweight, without compromising functional and visual properties. This will lead to substantial reduction of energy and raw material usage. Aqua cooling calendering technology will complement Valmet's bulk-saving calendering offering, which includes the revolutionary metal belt calendering as the ultimate lightweighting solution. Valmet has a pilot machine with aqua cooling technology available for customer trials.

"Improving energy, water and raw material efficiency are the key targets in Valmet's research and development work. Our innovation in aqua cooling calendering technology is a good example of how we can improve the customer's product quality and raw material efficiency. With aqua cooling calendering technology it is possible to get almost half of the metal belt calendering benefits with significantly lower investment costs," says Mika Viljanmaa, Calendering Technology Development Manager from Valmet and 2012 Marcus Wallenberg Prize winner for his ground-breaking development of metal belt calendering technology.

First delivery to Stora Enso's Ingerois mill in Finland

Stora Enso has decided to invest in this new aqua cooling calendering technology at their BM 4 packaging board machine in Ingerois, Finland. The target of the rebuild is to improve board quality, while also increasing bulk saving potential. The rebuild includes new web moisturizing and evaporation cooling equipment. The rebuilt production line is scheduled to start up in September 2015.

The order is included in Valmet's first quarter 2015 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

Information about the customer Stora Enso and the Ingerois mill

Property and asset consultants at Lambert Smith Hampton (formerly ES Group) have been appointed to carry out a sale of the assets of a Kent-based recycled newsprint paper manufacturer, after the firm, which was founded in 1922, went into administration on 24 February.

Aylesford Newsprint, which produced more than 400,000 tonnes of recycled newsprint each year, ceased to manufacture following the appointment of administrators from KPMG.  Specialists at LSH have since been instructed by the Administrators to undertake a sale of the news print business’s assets. LSH has confirmed that the sale is likely to consist of a variety of online auctions and private treaty phases. Sale One will take place on 19 May and include internal transport and mobile plant.  Sale Two will take place on 20 May and include engineering and sheet metalworking equipment.  There will be an opportunity to view both sales on 12 and 13 May.  The principal items of machinery to be sold by Private Treaty, in association with John Wilkie Paper Mill Services Ltd, will include 2 paper making machines by Valmet and Beloitte Walmsley together with associated ancillary equipment.  In 1995, £250m was invested in the Valmet paper manufacturing line.

Commenting on the instruction, Mike Hanson (photo), Director at LSH’s Machinery & Business Assets team, said:

“This sale is sadly indicative of a decline in the newsprint industry which has suffered in recent years from over capacity and a tough operational landscape. Despite these unfortunate circumstances, we will use our expertise to undertake a targeted campaign to generate widespread bidder interest and secure a successful sale of Aylesford Newsprint’s assets.”
