Valmet and Children and Youth Foundation launch a unique social responsibility program to enhance employment possibilities for young people in Finland
To celebrate its 220 years of industrial history and the centenary of Finland's independence, Valmet is offering 100 young people an opportunity to develop their working life skills. The company will hire young people aged 16-29, who might for example have challenges in finding their paths in life or in working life skills, to complete practical work training and gain work experience in its Finnish units during the spring and autumn.
"Valmet has strong roots in Finland, and the company has played a significant role in the development of the country throughout its long history. In this year of celebration, we want to remember the young people in Finland. We are offering an opportunity to practice working life skills especially to those young people who are still searching for their strengths and paths in life, and need support," says Pasi Laine, President and CEO of Valmet.
Valmet's program was planned and will be executed in cooperation with Children and Youth Foundation, Academic Work and Work Pilots. The Children and Youth Foundation is responsible for finding the right young people for the program and for coaching their Valmet mentors. Academic Work provides the participants with coaching in job searches and study-related issues as part of the program. Work Pilots is handling some of the worker compensations.
Ninety young people applied for the spring program, and the 46 who were chosen started today, April 18, in the following Valmet units: Tampere, Pori, Ulvila, Järvenpää, Kajaani, and Espoo. Another group of young people will start practical work training at Valmet's Jyväskylä, Tampere, Raisio, and Järvenpää units in the autumn.
Each of the participants gets a personal mentor from Valmet, responsible for creating a safe and inspiring environment for the trainees and providing meaningful assignments that help them practice their working life skills and build self-confidence.
"The transition to working life is a sensitive time of change in a young person's life. It may very well be an exciting - and even scary - moment for many. Therefore, positive working life experiences are extremely important at this stage, as they strengthen young people's self-esteem and relieve any fears they may have about working life. Now, Valmet's practical training program offers young people a unique opportunity to strengthen their working life skills in a safe environment in cooperation with their mentors," says Tuula Colliander from the Children and Youth Foundation.
"Youth employment is close to our heart and the basis of all operations at Academic Work. When Valmet approached us with this great idea, it was obvious that we would join them in this project. We want to support young people in finding their best path in life, whether that involves a job, training, or a hint of inspiration and energy to proceed in a new direction," says Laura Korpilauri from Academic Work.

A Valmet supplied demonstration scale plant for second generation sugar extraction officially opened at Sappi Ngodwana Mill in South Africa
In 2016 Sappi and Valmet agreed on a joint development project to deliver a demonstration plant to Sappi Ngodwana Mill in South Africa in order to explore and optimize the extraction of biorenewable chemicals.
The demonstration plant was officially opened on April 5, 2017. Guests from all over the world participated in the opening ceremony which included speeches from Sappi and Valmet management representatives.
The event was opened by Alex Thiel, Chief Executive Officer of Sappi Southern Africa and followed by SW Engelbrecht, General Manager Sappi Ngodwana Mill, who gave a mill perspective. Bertel Karlstedt, Business Line President Pulp and Energy, Valmet, highlighted the good cooperation between Sappi and Valmet and finally Luis Kruyshaar, leader of Sappi Biotech division, introduced the biotechnology concept.
"The plant continues Sappi's strategic move into the biomaterials and bio-energy business fields to extract more value from the production processes and in response to the global demand for renewable materials with a lower carbon footprint," commented Andrea Rossi, Group Head Technology from Sappi.
"The development of solutions to replace fossil materials with renewable ones and to produce new high-value end products is one of Valmet's research and development focus areas. This project is a concrete example of new opportunities. By working together, we have been able to combine Valmet's leading technology knowledge with Sappi's process and market insight," said Bertel Karlstedt, Business Line President, Pulp and Energy from Valmet.
"New revenue opportunities include possibilities to extract biobased materials from the cooking plant such as hemicellulose sugars and lignin for beneficiation to higher value biochemicals. The products under development will expand Sappi's renewable biomaterials offering which include nanocellulose, biocomposites and lignosulphonate," said Louis Kruyshaar, leader of the new Sappi Biotech division.
The plant is close to industrial size and makes it possible to study the next generation dissolving cooking process and test new ideas in mill scale.

Valmet's investor website awarded the best in Finland
Valmet's investor website won the 'Best investor website' contest, arranged by the Finnish Foundation for Share Promotion and the Finnish Society of Financial Analysts, in the category of Large Cap companies. In the contest, the Finnish websites of all the companies listed in Nasdaq Helsinki were evaluated. Valmet was ranked the best in the Large Cap category for the second time.
There were four categories in the contest: Large Cap, Mid Cap and Small Cap companies based on market value, and the companies listed in First North. All the main target groups for investor websites - analysts, institutional investors, private investors and brokers - were represented in the jury, which was led by Professor Jarmo Leppiniemi. In their evaluation, the jury concentrated on seven criteria: usability and visual appearance; strategy, growth and profitability; presentation of net sales and financial result; financial targets and historical performance; description of risks; Corporate Governance and sustainable operations, and responsiveness on mobile devices. Compared to the previous years, this time more emphasis was put on usability on mobile devices.
The jury acknowledged Valmet especially for the clear structure of the website and illustrative graphics. "The prize is a great recognition for the persistent work we have done. We continuously strive to further develop Valmet's investor website, and have also had the courage to put effort into new communication channels, like the video gallery and our IR blog", says Calle Loikkanen, Director, Investor Relations.
