The Valmet Chip 'n' Bark Moisture Analyzer (Valmet CBA) offers pulp mills a new tool to advance productivity and efficiency. Continuously measuring wood chip moisture provides the means to accurately control cooking liquor to chip mass ratio for improved digester operation. When applied to monitor biomass moisture, better boiler efficiency is enabled by the continuous indication of heating value to optimize fuel feeding control and supplementary fuel use.

Improved process performance by innovative analyzer

Valmet CBA replaces time consuming oven dry laboratory measurements by utilizing microwave technology to continuously measure chip, bark, forest residue biomass or recycled wood moisture. A sample flow is taken from the conveyer chute, pushed through the unobstructed measurement chamber and then returned to the chute. Disturbances that affect conveyor mounted instruments have been eliminated with the innovative design and measurement concept.

Valmet Chip 'n' Bark Moisture Analyzer (Valmet CBA)

"As chip and biomass moisture have such a great effect on productivity and efficiency, the continuous measurement provided by Valmet CBA can be effectively used in real time control and provide a rapid return on investment. Together with Valmet's other successful analyzers and controls, it is another tool for the complete optimization of the pulp mill and power plant", says Antti Kokkonen, Product manager, Automation business line, Valmet.

Robust, continuous measurement of wood chip or biomass moisture from 0 to 70%

The robust construction of Valmet CBA, equipped with an integral screw feed sampling unit, is designed for trouble free and straightforward installation. A combination of microwave resonance, Q-value and sample temperature is used to accurately measure moisture content from 0 to 70% and optional heated screw tubes are available where the possibility of ice or frozen material exists. With Industrial Internet functionality, measurement data, alarms and diagnostics are all remotely accessible. Not requiring any special certification or safety procedures, Valmet CBA is applicable to all wood species and forest biomass moisture measurements.

Valmet IQ Webo Monitoring System

Compact and modular camera

The web monitoring system camera is compact in size and has a modular structure. Modularity allows the use of different kinds of cameras and optics, such as a manual or motor zoom, or pinhole optics. Furthermore, a separate washer can be added if the camera is located in a challenging environment where cleanliness might present a problem.

The camera is equipped with the latest high-sensitivity Sony CMOS sensor. It is also possible to use a color camera.

New efficient LED light

Unlike the previous model, the Valmet IQ Web Monitoring System has a separate compact LED light module that is synchronized with the camera. This allows better optimization of the light pattern and its direction (patent pending). In total, 140 LEDs are included that feature the latest LED technology. A light output of 45,000 lumens is reached with only 35 watts of power.

Easy to install, use and maintain

The renewed web monitoring system is fully compatible with older generation systems. Data is transferred through standard 1 gigabyte Ethernet components. Due to the low number of components, the system is easy to install, use and maintain.

Technical description of the Valmet IQ Web Monitoring System

The Valmet IQ Web Monitoring Systemis one of the two elements of the Valmet IQ Process and Quality Vision (PQV) System, a comprehensive machine vision solution. The other element in the PQV system that Valmet launched in 2015 is the Valmet IQ Web Inspection System.

The Valmet IQ Web Monitoring Systemrecords video images of the crucial events in the process, such as web breaks, tail feeding and defects triggered by the IQ Web Inspection System. Recorded images are available for playback, enabling operators to quickly find the origin of the event and correct the problem. This shortens downtime after breaks and improves runnability. Optimized machine efficiency delivers fast payback on investment.

"Daio Paper planned for a new white liquor filter to be installed in parallel with the existing two lines of white liquor filters. This investment is done in order to be able to increase the white liquor production, which was limited in the existing lines. Daio selected the Valmet OptiDisc WL filter as the preferred technology for this de-bottlenecking project," says Jiro Nakamura, Product Sales Manager at Valmet.

Technical details about the delivery

White liquor filters are used at pulp mill's chemical recovery process to secure a consistent quality of the white liquor, with an optimal strength suitable for the plant. Modern digesters need a high and consistent quality of white liquor to produce the optimal pulp quality and yield in cooking.

Valmet's delivery includes a new OptiDisc WL filter, pumps piping, valves, platforms, erection and start-up services. The OptiDisc WL filter produces completely clear white liquor and washes the lime mud. The very high white liquor yield increases upstream capacity and eliminates the potential process disturbances that increased amount of dregs, and other non-process elements (NPE's) in the white liquor, can cause in the pulp cooking process.
