Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper celebrates the International Year of Forests by supporting an NGO-led reforestation project

Mondi will donate 1 percent of the net proceeds of Green Range certified paper sold on November 15th, 2011 to the OroVerde project “Guatemala – Tree for Tree”

To mark the UN designated International Year of Forests 2011, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper has launched a new initiative to support re-forestation around the world in conjunction with the NGO OroVerde. Mondi, an international paper and packaging company, will donate 1 percent of the net proceeds of Green Range certified copy paper sold on November 15th to the OroVerde project “Guatemala – Tree for Tree.” For every euro donated to the project one tree can be planted.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests recognising that forests play a critical role in the achievement of sustainable development, poverty eradication and internationally agreed development goals. Responsible forest management enables a wide range of social and economic benefits and environmental services, such as livelihoods for people and habitats for animals and plants.

“We are pleased to kick off a number of initiatives in support of the 2011 International Year of Forests,” says Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper. “The OroVerde ‘Tree for Tree’ project in Guatemala presents an opportunity to preserve a unique biodiverse rain forest that provides refuge for many rare and endangered animal species and also helps to combat climate change through carbon storage.” One hectare of growing forest can trap up to 29 tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere per year.

On September 29th Mondi hosted its first Green Event in Barnes, U.K. with over 60 participants from Merchants, customers, and NGO representatives. On September 30th Mondi attended FSC® Friday, which focused on the launch of their ‘In Good Company CEO Campaign’. “

“Mondi prides itself on being a responsible corporate citizen and using natural resources in a sustainable way. FSC certification plays a major role in this and encompasses both social and environmental aspects of forest management. Our holistic approach creates long-term value for all our stakeholders and upholds our stewardship role,” said Mondi CEO David Hathorn, who is featured in the CEO campaign.

Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper has also developed an online Green Module, which goes live end of October. The tool will be openly available on our website for customers, partners and the public to learn more about general environmental topics, sustainable practices that relate to Mondi and the paper industry, and the environmental certification schemes that are an important requisite for our Green Range branded papers.

The new packaging displays a contemporary design that highlights key product features.

September 20, 2011, Vienna – Today Mondi announces a new package design for its most popular office paper brands IQ and MAESTRO®. The design provides a more contemporary look that draws attention to the characteristics and environmental accreditations specific to IQ and MAESTRO® and their sub-brands.

“The impetus for the new package design came from customers wanting straightforward product information that could be accessed quickly in a busy office environment. Therefore, we increased the visibility of all environmental accreditations so they appear on the front, back and sides of IQ and MAESTRO® packaging, as well as key product characteristics,” says Johannes Klumpp Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

On the back side of each package of IQ and MAESTRO®, customers will find a table that concisely describes the entire brand portfolio, providing the range of grammages available, formats, and recommended applications. Furthermore, logos are accompanied by explanations about each label and certification, such as Green Range, FSC®, ColorLok® or TRIOTEC®.

maestro iqIQ
The colour-coding and motifs for all IQ sub-brands have remained the same. However, in place of the narrow colour band that ran across the top of IQ packages, customers will now find a bold swatch of colour – gold (IQ selection smooth), brown (IQ premium), orange (IQ appeal), blue (IQ allround) red (IQ economy) – and the sub-brand name wrapping around the upper right corner and down the side for easy identification. The same holds true for IQ color, Mondi’s tinted range that is available in a transparent plastic wrapper to reveal the colour of the paper. A horizontal strip of colour along the bottom right corner of the ream also displays the grammage, sheet count, format, and printer suitability.

MAESTRO®
MAESTRO® customers know this brand as the high performance paper for business users and the new packaging now better reflects this concept. Using consistent maestro groupMAESTRO® sub-brand colours – gold (MAESTRO® supreme), silver (MAESTRO® extra), purple (MAESTRO® bulky), red (MAESTRO® special) and blue (MAESTRO® standard) – the new wrapper image combines the MAESTRO® logo with a close-up view of hands typing on a computer keyboard. On the transparent package for the tinted MAESTRO® color, the logo is multicoloured, echoing the 29 shades available.

In addition to IQ premium, IQ selection smooth, MAESTRO® extra and MAESTRO® supreme, customers can now find the ColorLok® logo on packages of IQ appeal and MAESTRO® bulky. The primary benefits of ColorLok® Technology are realized with inkjet printing and result in brighter images and graphics, crisp text with bolder blacks, and less smears due to rapid drying. To promote the extended paper range with ColorLok® Technology, Mondi will launch a ColorLok® campaign toward the end of 2011.

The world’s fastest running paper machine with a single shoe press, PM18, achieved a new speed record on August 9th 2011, producing 1620 metres of paper/minute.

Ružomberok, Slovakia, August 23rd 2011 – Since the start-up of PM18 eight years ago, the operations team at Mondi SCP in Ružomberok, Slovakia have reached two world records for speed. Mondi SCP set the first world record for PM18 in 2009 and surpassed it by 20 meters/minute on August 9th, 2011 with a new speed record of 1620m/min.

PM18 is the largest paper machine at Mondi SCP mill, producing over 10 million A4 sheets every hour. The mill’s managing director, Roman Senecky, commented on his team’s success and hard work stating, “Today’s record is tomorrow’s production target. Our team deserves a big thank you for their latest achievement. From wood processing to pulp production, cutting and proper logistics of the paper – the end success is being able to satisfy our customers.”

The mill’s smallest and oldest machine, PM16, has also maintained its top performing position as a Metso benchmark leader on lowest percentage in break time, shut-down time and broke among uncoated fine paper machines. PM16’s ranking in 2010 marks the paper machine’s fourth consecutive standing as Metso Benchmark top performer in these categories.

In response to the successes of PM 16, Mondi SCP paper division director Franz Aigner comments, “It is not all about technology. This is proven by the fact that same machines reach various outputs. What makes a major difference is having skilled people on board.”

The project aims to keep Mondi’s Syktyvkar forestry operations in the leading position in the Russian forest industry

August 17, 2011 - Last month Mondi Syktyvkar launched the large-scale Forest of the Future project to further strengthen its forestry operations. The program is scheduled to close in 2013.

"The aim of the project is to bring our timber business to the next level by increasing the efficiency and profitability of our forestry operations," said Mondi Syktyvkar Managing Director Gerhard Kornfeld. According to Mr. Kornfeld, the Forest of the Future project will further the achievements made in mill’s sustainable forestry operations during the past three years and create a single competitive and balanced system that follows a distinctive strategy. The anticipated outcomes: improved efficiency and an integrated supply chain. Key pillars of this project are Lesnaya Kompaniya (logging), Ezhvatrans (transport) and Ezhvadorstroy (road construction).

The breadth of the project covers the entire wood supply system from Mondi Syktyvkar leased forests to the preparation of raw wood for the pulp flow. It will also include all forestry subsidiaries and associated companies of Mondi Syktyvkar.

"The project will help us to preserve our strategic advantage in Syktyvkar and ensure the sustainability of the forestry operations. In this case, we will focus on using up-to-date methods of forest management," said Klaus Peller, Mondi Syktyvkar member of the board responsible for forestry.

With ColorLok® Technology the pigment remains at the paper surface while the ink penetrates deep into the paper, resulting in the crisp, vivid print quality.

Mondi’s NAUTILUS® SuperWhite and NAUTILUS® Universal can add perfect runnability and excellent blanket compatibility to their current list of accreditations since obtaining HP Indigo’s SPP certification. NautilusUniversal_1087NAUTILUS®’s exceptional environmental profile, which cumulatively includes the EU Ecolabel, Blue Angel certification and a CO2 Neutral option, assures printers that these papers cause less harm to the environment – and their machines – as excellent runnability considerably decreases printer wear and premature maintenance.

The HP Indigo SPP certification applies to uncoated products which have no primer surface treatment. The criteria for SPP certification is based heavily on the runnability and blanket compatibility of paper. In these areas, both NAUTILUS® SuperWhite and NAUTILUS® Universal received the best possible rating — three stars. HP Indigo SPP certification is a significant benchmark for light colour and monochrome printing, key factors to consider in industries like publishing and such applications as transactional invoicing. Moreover, there is a cost advantage for customers who want the reassurance of a quality guarantee from a reputable OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for an unprimed paper.

Nautilussuperwhiteco2NAUTILUS® SuperWhite and NAUTILUS® Universal are ideal for book- and magazine-printing and for transactional material, like standard invoices and statement. Offering a wide range of certified grammages, NAUTILUS® SuperWhite received a 3-star rating for blanket compatibility and runnablitiy on grammages between 70-250 gsm. NAUTILUS® Universal is 3-star certified on grammages between 80-250 gsm. Both products are available in the typical HP Indigo formats, 32 x 46 cm and 46 x 32 cm.

In 2010, NAUTILUS® SuperWhite became available with a CO2 neutral option. It is also produced with FSC® recycled fibre and is EU Ecolabel certified. In addition to having the EU Ecolabel, NAUTILUS® Universal is Blue Angel certified.
